#267.SERVICE WASH. Alpa Depani and Thomas Randal.

The project that I am working, called Service Wash done by Alpa Depani and Thomas Randal, is thought to expand the laundry services in favour of homeless, that live in a marginal way and have no form to be clean, what produces exclusion. By talking with charities the laundrette will be stablished as a place to be hygienic and clean the clothes.

The space will be transform, service units will be conform by showers and places for haircuts. This units will be dimensioned by the standard washer-dryers and as prefabricated, they can be multiplied with facility. This machines are accompanied by benches that generate a place to stay and wait.

Also lockers for storage small pertenences will be placed. Wheelie baskets also are used for a local tail.

I have chosen that project because of the interest and the impact that it have in the city. London is full of laundries due to their style of life, so I think that the concept of the project to re-use this places is really interesting to create a claim to generate awareness among passers.

I have been looking at different references to confirm whether the idea is totally new or someone else have been thinking in the idea of helping homeless by cleaning their clothes. I found one interesting.

It is called: ORANGE SKY LAUNDRY and it is the first laundry mobile service created by two young men the year 2014 in Australia.

In their web page people can donate, becoming volunteer or just get information about what they do.

After that I can confirm that the project 'Service Wash' is an based on the above-named but they also consider the personal hygiene, providing showers and haircuts.

But the project also have some faults. ALthough the idea is so grounded and has solid principles that solves, the idea to combine static locations with the nomadic life of the homeless can be improved by the movement of that places, as the 'Orange Sky Laundry' but more complex like 'Service Wash'.

Another way to improve the project could be to add the basic necesities to the laundry, to generate a space where homeless can in addition to be clean, also be fed and rest or sleep under a roof.

The reference is 'Pump&Jump' by Jeong-yun heo, a korean girl. The idea is to replace the unconfortable carts that the homeless have and also provide a place to sleep protecting them from external adversities. It can be related with our project due to the idea of give the homeless basic cares like sleeping, cleaning, eating... It also reaches the idea of continue movement that I talked before.

I complete this reflexion with the following sentence below:

'If one of our objectives was to improve the quality of life of the people without resources, we will see less poverty in the world, forming an inclusive society'
