After the last correction we were
continuing to think about our framework. The last days we especially kept an
eye on the choice of material.
The first ideas were easily
found: How about a frame of wood or metal?
After researching for some
impressions, we unfortunately came quickly to the result that because of its only
possible two-dimensional movement, this is not the best choice of material for
our pavilion.
We were tinkering with the idea of not working in an additional
way of designing. Therefore, we had to come around with new concepts for the
subtracted volume for the frame.
To work with the subtraction,
we need to create a geometric form with a certain wall thickness. One way to do
this especially in a smaller scale is to use papier-mâché. The system of papier-mâché
works like this: You have to build a substructure whereupon you put the new
form with a mixture of paper and glue. After the drying phase you can reform
the substructure and you get the substructures counterpart.
To handle the upcoming
instability of this material while increasing the proportion, we were looking
for a different, more stable material which works in the same way. We found out
about concrete canvas. It´s like a cloth dipped in mortar which reacts by
hydration and after a cooling phase it becomes a really hard and strong
material. The created stabled form is water- and fire-resistant. Because of its
thickness, it is easy to cut with an angle grinder.
